Canadian-born interior architect and designer Garrett Swain founded his eponymous studio in 2009. He moved to London in early 2001 and quickly set about absorbing all things design related.
As the client services manager of a central London hotel he found himself in a unique position when the opportunity to refurbish the bedrooms came about. His first project was the refurbishment of two hundred and thirty-bedrooms and the ballroom at the Bonnington Hotel in central London at the age of 25. This set him on the road to interior design and was to be followed up with studies at the prestigious Inchbald School of Design in Sloane Square.
Afterwards it led to designing with notable hospitality design firms such as Hirsch Bedner & Associates and RPW. Clients included the Four Seasons, Marriot, Radisson, and the boutique group of stately country house hotels Hand Picked. Residential projects soon followed.
His style is fluid and detail orientated, a reflection of what’s interesting and topical in the world around but always in tune with the client. The best results are often achieved by mixing the old and new. Objects and materials are contextualized and juxtaposed to feel fresh, timeless and relevant; side by side with daily technology. Garrett’s wealth of knowledge across different crafts and an in-depth understanding of materials – upholstery, soft furnishings, joinery, furniture, stone, woods - ensures the right material for the right situation.
Approachable and flexible are two key attributes Garrett prescribes to. Clients should feel at ease to express any opinion and then a range of options and scenarios can be explored. Thousands of guests in his early career have guaranteed this. The very nature of your home is that it’s yours; a reflection of how you live and an expression of you. The designer’s role is simply to translate your ideas. By accepting only a handful of projects at any given time this allows for a very focused and engaging experience. Communication is key.
The studio is celebrating ten years quietly designing and this year also coincides with the publication of the most detailed project to date and will be proudly featured Architectural Digest magazine.
The next ten years will see the studio grow and offer a greater range of creative services including building architecture, garden and landscape design. The complete package.
